Why My Daughter Named My Business
– And Why That Matters to You
My daughter’s favourite colour is yellow.
When I started this business, that’s where I began –
and built from there, because it reminds me:
Understanding things properly, and building them to last.
There’s a lighthouse in everything I do.
She doesn’t know it yet.
She’s still young enough to call volcanoes “bolocanoes” — and I’ve never once corrected her, because some words are too good to fix.
But she’s growing up in a world being reshaped faster than any of us can fully track.
And somewhere along the way, I made a quiet decision:
I was going to understand it well enough to talk to her about it honestly.
Not perform understanding.
Actually have it.
That decision became Yellow Lava.
I didn’t arrive at this work in a straight line.
Nobody who does it honestly does.
Before I was a website strategist, I was in a room with teenagers that the system had already written off.
LAC kids — looked after children — with emotional and behavioural histories that meant trust wasn’t something they gave.
It was something you had to survive not getting, for long enough that they eventually stopped testing you.
Some of them went off the rails.
Badly.
I sat in magistrates courts.
I showed up anyway.
And I learned something that has never left me:
You cannot rush the trust timeline.
You can only stay consistent inside it.
I didn’t know then that I was learning the only version of SEO that actually works.
The kind built on trust, structure, and systems — not tactics.
After that came the gym floors and the running tracks.
Clients who came to me not because they wanted to get fit, but because something had broken — cancer, obesity, divorce, the slow collapse of self-esteem that nobody talks about until it’s already happened.
One person’s goal was to walk upstairs without stopping.
Another wanted to finish a triathlon.
Another just wanted to feel like themselves again.
What I learned quickly was that changing one thing in isolation never worked.
You couldn’t fix the training without fixing the sleep.
Couldn’t fix the sleep without understanding the stress.
Couldn’t understand the stress without meeting the partner — because a partner who doesn’t understand the journey becomes a blocker, and a blocker undoes everything.
The whole system had to move together.
And the person in the middle had to trust that you understood all of it, not just the visible part.
I didn’t know then that I was learning technical SEO.
Along the way, I kept formalising what I was learning.
Psychology degrees.
Fitness certifications.
Triathlon coaching.
Google qualifications.
Not because I needed more letters after my name, but because every time I went deeper, I found something useful.
Something that made me better at the actual work of helping people change things that resisted changing.
I built networks of people who were better than me in specific lanes — a triathlon coach, a swimming coach, an SEO mentor — and I absorbed everything I could and applied it.
Same instinct now.
Different field.
Different names.
When AI started reshaping search — and everything else — I didn’t panic.
I’d seen systems disrupt before.
I’d sat in the wreckage with people and helped them figure out what to do next.
But I wanted to understand it properly.
Not skim the surface.
Not repost someone else’s take.
Actually get inside it.
Because my daughter was going to grow up inside it — and I owed her a father who could speak to her world honestly.
So I built Yellow Lava.
Named after the way she sees volcanoes.
Built around the way I’ve always worked — slowly, honestly, for the long term.
